Post Operative Medicine

Rating: 10

I was prescrobed previcox for my 51 lb dog Sadie for post operative purposes. I read in the directions to give minimum dosage of 2.27 mg per lb. They prescribed her 227 mg per tablet for 3 days. My math tells me that's off but I don't know what to do and I will never take my dog back to that vet. Can you please help. I also don't know if I am to wait 2 hrs or 24 hrs to administer the dose and have no written intstuctions.
Please help.

    Hello

I hope Sadie is doing well after her operation, you don't say what the operation was for. As you are probably well aware Previcox is an anti inflammatory and it lasts 24 hours, usually vets give an injection on the day of the operation and then medication starts afterwards, I know you feel disappointed in your vet but please please have a chat with them as labels with written instructions are a must and it may just be an over sight. Previcox can be given more than once a day and as you already know at a higher dose but there maybe a reason that your vet has given you a low dose, such that Sadie is an older dog, she is on other medication or that there maybe underlying kidney or liver problems so wouldn't be able to comment on doses. It is better to give anti inflammatories with food so just a small amount of food so you know Sadie has had it. Please speak to the vet

Give Sadie a cuddle from me and I hope everything goes well

Aloha Sarah, Thank you so much for your response. I truly appreciate it. Sadie was gored by a wild pig. Wild pigs are common here in Hawaii so it is part of the territory. Her open wound was about a half inch deep and and inch long. Sadie has no liver or kidney problems and is only 4 and not on any other medication. She is very well cared for and healthy. I appreciate your encouragement to communicate with the vet. Although I have had a great history of care for both of my pets....there are changes at the vetrinary I go to and the same level of care is not being maintained. If you know of any good Vets in Hilo Hawaii I would be open to any and all suggestions. Mahalo.
