Hello Doc,
My dog has started (2 days now)licking his rectum to the point of bleeding. What do you think his problem could be? He does not seem constipated. He is having regular bowel movements and I do not see any signs of worms.

    I'm Barry & I am A Nurse...so you know, I don't want to mislead you.

Well even though you don't see worms, he may have worms it's just that their so small (microscopic) your not going to see them.

One thing could also be and that is anal glands are impacted. anal glands sit at about the 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock just under the anus.they most of the time empty when the dog has a bowel movment, sometimes they don't then start to cause pain or discomfort, typically to dog or even cats rub (scoot) their but on the floor, bite/lick at their but or tail.

If it goes on for a wile without emptying it could get infected, burst and will have a mess on your hands.

Either way I recommend you see the vet, have his stool checked for worms and have the vet express his anal glands.

    I hope that helps.

    Regards,

    Barry
