Disinfecting home and protecting a new kitten from feline panleukopenia virus

My family adopted a kitten from a local italian market here. it was seemingly healthy and had a new kitten appt. scheduled for the following week. He never made it that far b/c he suddenly became ill and died at the vet ER of feline panleukopenia virus. Now we are in the process of adopting another kitten, a maine coon from a breeder. It has been vaccinated. I have not brought it home because I am afraid that even though it has had 2 sets of shots that it still might get infected from residual virus here in the house. Also the Mother died during childbirth so they were hand raised and missed out on the important colostrum. What can I use to clean and kill the virus in my home with? should I worry about the places the kitten went before he got sick, the couch and ect? should I get another booster shot right as soon as I bring the kitten home? it is 3 months old today. Thanks

Make sure the product you buy doesnt contain phenols as this is fatal to cats. The following list can be found on the back of somed disinfectants and should be avoided:

(carbolic acid; monohydroxybenzene; hydroxybenzene; benzenol; phenylic acid; phenyl hydroxide; benzophenol; phenyl hydrate; phenylic alcohol; monophenol;phenic acid; and oxybenzene)

There are many products out there on the market, we use trigene a lot in our kennels. What I would do is shop around and see whats on offer. I would also phone up your local practice for advice and ask what they useas theyhave plenty of experience in this area. Make sure all the walls, surfaces and units are washed down and the covers of your couch washed etc

As far as vaccinations go, your pet will have recieved the right amount (2 shots) it needs to help fight off any virus it may come across. Another shot wont do any good, it will just overdose your kitten.

Good luck with your kitten. Let me know if you have any other worries
