dog eating kitty litter

I just discovered that my dog has been eating the kitty litter. He has been having diareah and this last time there was blood in it. I can't afford to take him to the vet. Is there any thing I can do or will he be ok if I can keep him from the litter? Less important but why would a dog want to eat kitty litter?

Symptoms: Diarrhea

Hi there. If your dog is bright, happy, not vomitting and still eating, you can try firstly keeping him away from the litter, and feeding him a bland diet (cooked chicken meat and rice) for 3-4 days. If his faeces improves, you can gradually (over 3-4 days) change him back onto dog food.  If there is still blood in there or if he still has diarrhoea, or if he starts to show other signs (lethargy, vomitting etc), I would strongly reccomend a vet visit.  I would also advise worming him with a decent quality wormer.  As for why, most retrievers make it their life's ambition to eat anything and everything in sight and tend to ge themselves in trouble along the way!!  Hope that helps!
