Defecation changes

We have a 13 year old German shapard/Austraalian shepard mix and very recently (the last month) we have noticed a change in her defecation behavior. Previous she used to go on grass or the side of the road/sidewalk; but recently she will go in the middle of the sidewalk/road (like a horse). The vet said this is normal for a dog her age but it can be embarrassing because she has always had a delicate digestive system. Everything else is good for her age. She is arthritic (we give her ketoprofen). Any ideas?

    Hi

Sometimes when dogs get old they can't hold onto until they get to their preferred defecation area and simply have to go where they are. She may also have started to associate her normal places with a bit of pain when she goes to squat down and quite often this puts them off going where they would normally go.

You might find this is the easiest way for her to go, the least painful so give her the benefit of the doubt. Carry with you a scooper and lots of wet wipes to clean the road etc so you don't annoy other users and if they look at you in disgust tell them that you sincerely hope they don't have this trouble when they are elderly.

    All the best

Good Dog? Bad Dog? By Rosie Barclay. This book concentrates on changing the traditional views of how we perceive and treat our dogs using what we have learned from scientific research so far. It starts at the beginning by looking at ways of how to chose and bring up a new puppy that may reduce the likelihood of future problems. It then goes on to cover different problems that commonly occur between owners and their maturing or adult dogs by discussing real case studies. TO BUY VISIT www.rosiebarclay.com
