when to say when...

shelby

User says: Shelby has been around the Lab/hound mix dog I have named Amelia all day all the time. They share everything. She shows no signs of this. Shelby started this 3 days ago and it was light caugh. Can this just come out of nowhere? she has not been around other dogs ever except Amelia. Is there a point where I stop letting nature runs its course. Is there a final time that its take her in because nature is not gonna work it out of her on its own? she is full of spunk, wants to play even with the caugh, I have been trying to keep her calm and resting. I have seperated her from Amelia. I did take a non-needle syringe and gave her some alcahol free nyquil like product but it did not even phase her. I have also been giving her 1/4 of a 500 mg tylenol every 12 hours. I am far from wealthy so I am sadly having to avoid the vet as much as I can. I have to do it for myself even as a diabetic and its sad I have to do it to the dogs as well until things get better financially.

    Hi,

Does Shelby go outside? What does the cough sound like?

Yes shelby goes outside to our back yard but, she is never exposed to other dogs. None of my neighbors have dogs and she is behind a 6 foot high double boarded fence. meaning there are wooden slats on both sideds of the fence. she overcame her caugh about 3 days ago. Amelia, my other dog never caught this from shelbly and they only stayed seperated one day. I was not able to keep them apart.

Matt, I honestly believe this was something airborn, not passed with direct contact. It seemed to be a hit or miss thing one dog got it, the other no, and both were directly exposed and interacted with the other. there is also a lot of pollen in the air at this time in southern United States, we reside in Florida in the city of Sebastianl so allergies are a possibility although unlike humans there has not been any expected sneezing issues to clear sinus pasages from either dog. she never lost her spunk and was never lathargic in any way. Just had the caugh.

    Hi,

I agree that it could be something airborne or also an allergic type reaction. If it is an allergy that may explain why only Shelby was affected. Is she any better or worse since you first asked?

She is as healthy as the day I brought her home.. no wait.. that was a happy day for us but she was not healthy then.. ok she is as healthy and fit as I have ever seen her in her 1.5 years with me. so sign of infection in other dog.
