Odd behavior following walks

Rating: 9
Zoe
Zoe

After returning home from walks, Zoe acts oddly. As soon as she gets home, she takes a toy and carries it in her mouth while pacing frantically through the house for about 1 hour. This happens each time she goes for a walk. What does this behavior mean? Otherwise, she is playful, energetic, and affectionate.

    Dear Roland

Don't worry about this behaviour lots of dogs pick up toys/slippers/socks etc and run about with them after an event that has excited them. We don't really know why they do this but it is more than likely something to do with having something that belongs to them or you which is familiar and fits nicely into the mouth.

However, an hour is quite a long time which possibly suggests that Zoe finds it hard to relax. Ignore her behaviour remain calm and stick the kettle on. Do not chase her about or show that you are worried about her behaviour. Perhaps give her something to do like a Kong with a small bit of marmite or meat spread smeared inside.

Many dogs will do this when their owners or visitors come into the home. Perhaps they are saying I live here and this is mine.

    Hope this helps

Good Dog? Bad Dog? By Rosie Barclay. This book concentrates on changing the traditional views of how we perceive and treat our dogs using what we have learned from scientific research so far. It starts at the beginning by looking at ways of how to chose and bring up a new puppy that may reduce the likelihood of future problems. It then goes on to cover different problems that commonly occur between owners and their maturing or adult dogs by discussing real case studies. TO BUY VISIT www.rosiebarclay.com
