There are many things that could cause kidney or multiple organ failure. I've seen several geriatric dogs with this type of condition, but I know it's not unusual at any age. I do know that it means your dog is sick, and you've done the very best thing in providing medical care for him. I would encourage you at this point, to talk to your vet, as these cases can be quite complicated, and only a qualified vet who is able to physically evaluate the dog and run labs on him will be able to truly answer this question.
I would like to congratulate you on doing your best for your dog. You may have saved his life.
