My dog has been bleeding when he urinates and dripping blood. We have taken him to the vet twice and been on meds and special diet. It has become very costly and with a new baby in the family was wondering if there is any over the counter meds of diet would could try? Please help as we love our dog. Is this life threating or painful for him? Thanks

    Dear Rich,

My first question is has your vet got to the bottom of this problem? Has he diagnosed an infection or is the cause still unclear? Obviously I ask because there are other reasons beyond infections why dogs urinate blood. Without knowing exactly what the cause is it is difficult to suggest further treatment.

The best approach would be to call your vet and ask whether they are sure of a diagnosis. Explain that you need an economical approach to the problem; whilst another course of antibiotics may seem simpler than further investigations, it may cost you more money in the long run.
