Dog Colds?

Rating: 9

My dog (adult, 3 yrs old) sounds like she is having problems breathing at night (she makes a lot of noises that sound like a person with a cold). Can she get a cold? Also, I've heard children's benyadral (sp?) can be used to help her symptoms? Is that true?

    Dear User,

Dogs do not tend to catch colds like we humans do (the type that make you feel down for a few days and then disappear).

How long has this been going on?

Does she tire when she exercises, and if so is this a recent change?

There is no easy answer I'm afraid and no immediate diagnosis. The best action you can take is to ask your local vet to examine her, paying particular attention to her respiratory system and heart.

Matt, Thanks for the response. Yes, I'm going to take her into the vet - you can't be too careful. To answer you though, it's hard to tell her normal activity level, since we only adopted her 5 days ago. Thanks! Matt

Thanks for your reply. I'd be interested to hear what your vet finds!
