Back Pain

Rocket hurt his back somehow in Sept/Oct. His back is swollen and very tender along his lower lumbar area (right where the back of the saddle pad sits). Saddle fits fine. We have been to 2 chiropractors and 2 vets. Madalyn Ward (chiro) thought it is a displaced sacrum back when this first happened. With no improvement, I took him to Elgin Vet Hospital (one of the best in Texas) 4 weeks ago. They could not give me an exact diagnosis. Other than the soreness in the back, the only other thing we found is his front right suspensory and back left hock were sore (slight lameness). We injected the suspensory, both hocks and the back with some sort of steroids (I think that is what it was), put him on some back pain medicine that Elgin concocted that is suppose to work great and he is on a 10-day regiment of muscle relaxers. I just started the muscle relaxers yesterday and the back meds 3 weeks ago. We are going on 6 months and I am still not seeing ANY improvement. Any suggestions?

Hi, I would give the medication chance to work first. Is he on rest - if he is still being ridden or is racing round the field he may keep on redamaging the same area. If he is no better with rest and the medication then I would recontact the vet hospital, you have not mentioned what tests he has had done, but if not already done they may be able to use scintigraphy or and MRI?? Costs also would be a limiting factor here as thes are very costly procedures. I wouldn't be too disheartened yet though, thiese things can sometimes take a long time, particularly if there is a possibility he may keep reinjuring the area.
