PUPPY WITH PNEMONIA?!

Rating: 10
PUDDING
PUDDING

I have a 9 week old pupy. I got him at 8 weeks and he had just got his booster 3 days prior. I had him for about 3 days and noticed he coughed a lot. People told me he would be okay, but I wanted to bring him to the vet anyways. I made an appointment with the vet a couple days later for the next day but the day I made the appt. the puppy started throwing up, so I changed it to that day. I brought him in and the vet listened to his heart and lungs (after taking his temp which was a little high) - she told me he has a pneumonia(sp?) - she gave him antibiotics that i give him twice a day and made a follow up appt. for 3 days later. I brought him today and his fever is gone and she said he seems like he is improving. The thing is he isnt eating much (maybe 1/2 cup per day) and i know its important for a puppy to eat a LOT. what should I do? Is he going to be okay? THe vet said his lack of appetite and throwing up could be due to his meds. What should I do??

What medication is he on? If he is on Clavamox they can switch to Vibramycin or Zithromax. The last choice would be Baytril. This is a very strong antibiotic, but is avoided in puppies as it can cause damage to the cartilage in joints.

Also what type of food is he eating? Some puppies will eat one type more than another.

I would offer Iams and Pro Plan wet, as well as dry of these varieties. This way food is always available.

He could have the wet food every 6 hours (1/4 can) and the dry could be left down all day:)

Please let me know how the little man does:)

He is on Vibramycin twice a day @ 6CC's each dose (he will be on the second bottle starting tomorrow) I've been trying to switch it up, I had dry food (Iams) down for most of the day, he took a nibble and walked away. Then I put a seperate bowl of wet (Iams) down (twice) and he ate both bowls. I actually ran out of the wet food after that and had to go back out (mind you today is sunday and everything closes early and it was 8PM) & the store I went to only had Pedigree for puppy (Iams was there, but no Puppy), so I bought that (He was on pedigree when I adopted him). I tried mixing both wet & dry after that with some warm water, he ate a little and walked away. Is he just picky? Is it okay to switch his food brand twice like that? What else can I do to help him eat?

I wouldn't switch from the Iams, as going from that to Pedigree would probably cause a little diarrhea. You can give him boiled chicken and rice (1 part boneless skinless chicken/or hamburger to 3 parts white rice) as this will not cause diarrhea, but most dogs love it:)

He may be picky, but antibiotics can definitely play a part. I know in some pets the vibramycin can cause a little nausea and diarrhea so he may not be interested in eating.

Unfortunately this just means you have to entice him:)

**I forgot it was Sunday and went to get food for my dogs right after they closed as well!! My hubby will just have to run out and get it tomorrow (on his broken leg)**

I hope he keeps eating the Iams wet well!!
