I have a cat wgo has blood in her urine for several months now. My vet has done an ultrasound to check for crystals. nothing. Also took a urine sample, by needle directly to the bladder. She has three rounds of antibiotics, one of baytril, two of zeniquin (Had to stop one, half way thru) because she started vomiting, i think a mix of flagyl and zenniquin together. Flagyl for giardia. My questionis the vet has really not told me anything except. she has no bacteria, in the urine. She is still peeing blood, though much less. what would you reccommend my next step to be.

I would recommend doing a urine culture to isolate any even microscopic bacteria. This will also tell you which antibiotics will be effective at clearing the infection. **your pet will need to have no antibiotics for 5 days prior to the culture or the results will be negative**

Is she on a urinary diet?

Hi Rae, Thanks for your help. If they did the needle, to the bladder, and kept the urine for like 10 days. Isn't that a culture? Or is that something different? And he did put her on antiobotics (Zennequin, basically because she is allergic to almost everything, clavamox, diphenhydramine, etc.. She has had anaphalaxsis shock (spelt wrong). Yes she is on C/D now. But it has only been about a week. She still has some blood on the fur around the pee hole. But it is a lot less. I did talk to my vet again last week. I was wanting to switch her to the wellness diet urinary one (no grain), thought it might help. He did tell me to find out the target PH, and if it covered Idiopathic Cystitis. I do not know if this is telling me what she has. What is Idiopathic Cystitis? I could not get this info, if you are familiar with wellness products. If you know please let me know? Sorry I did not get time to talk with him much to ask more, because I squeezed that appointment in. Cause my other cat broke her nail clearly off. And he was overwhelmed, and overbooked, so I did not push it.

Did they do the culture at the veterinary hospital? If so I would ask that they send it off to the lab to verify results.

Usually with a culture the pet is not on antibiotics (for at least 5 days). The needle aspiration of urine is performed and send to the lab for culture. Within 7-10 days they will give you results as well as what antibiotics would work with the type of bacteria she may have.

Here is a link with a large amount of info. on idiopathic cystitis:
