Cat with tail bite

Rating: 10

HI
My cat was bitten on the base of its tail by another cat. I took him t the vet who cleaned him up and sent him home. The vet said if his tail doesn't start moving it will have to be amputated. The tail did start moving but the wound is still open on top. He keeps licking the ointment off and gnawing at the wound. He even took his own stiches out. I tried to take him to the vet again but was told that he wouldn't be able to see me until Saturday (its monday) and even then he scheduled me into a surgery spot because he thinks the tail has to be amputated. But the tail moves fine, and he hasn't even seen the cat!!!! He seems amputee happy and I do not want the vet cutting off his tail needlessly. I asked him to give me cat meds in the meantime to stave off even more infection and I feel I have to take matters into my own hands to save my cat's tail. Even if it means making a headcone out of cardboard so that he doesn't lick his ointment off. Never mind the ointment leaves stains all over the house....

WHat can I do in the meantime? Do I gently assert pressure on the tail to get some of the fluid out? There was a bit of puss on the wound but I cleaned it and put ointment on yesterday now theres just clear fluid. But the tail is still swollen and blueish purplish. He swishes it around like normal but its not right...

Help..please...

-Andrea

Your cat has a deep abcess on the tail and needs cleaning twice daily, and antibiotics until it looks better. If the tail is moving and is warm, it may heal in a few weeks. If the infection is in the ligaments or boneof the tail the wound will continue to be swollen with pus and may need surgery and amputation

Thank you! Yeah I`ve been gently applying pressure to the area and am getting less and less puss out as time goes by and the swelling has gone down a lot. Yes the tail is warm and I've found the Elizabethan cat collar (which he hates) but he's stopped licking the ointment off. It still oozes a bit, but I'm giving him the meds the vet gave me, and the colouring is a little less bruised than it was. I won't let him outside though and its driving him insane. His yowling to be let out at night is terrible >

PS His tail swishes fine btw. In fact his makes a point of jumping on wherever I'm busy and swishing it in my face to remind me to let him out.
