The red maple is a big offender.  When the leaves fall off and dry.  Also, oak trees, walnut, cherry, peach and plum.  Also extremely toxic is oleander which is more of a bush than a tree but is the most common plant poisoning that I've seen.  People plant it often in pastures not realizing it's toxic.  Hope this helps.

I have never heard of a butternut tree, but I looked it up and it seems that it is not ok fro horses.  I guess it's an East coast tree (I'm in Cali).  It says that the bark of the trees are sometimes found in shavings purchased from small mills and can cause laminitis in horses, so no, butternut is not ok.  It also says that the pollen can cause laminitis in the spring months.  Probably the best thing to do is assess your pasture, determine which plants/trees/bushes are in the pasture and research those specific plants before allowing your horse to be around them.  Most nurseries will be able to help you determine what type of tree or bush it is if you take them a piece of it.  Good luck.
