Health question

We have a miniature dachsund(about 8 pounds) that is about 5 years old. She was just coming through the house and suddenly seemed unable to walk especially trouble with her back legs. She started shaking all over, a lot. We held her for about 3-4 minutes and she stopped shaking and I put her down and she took off at a run. The "spell" she had was very scary. Any ideas? No history of anything like that before.

It may have been a 'spasm' in her back. She may have a compressed disc that caused her pain, paralysis, then resolved. This is not usually the norm. Usually the paralysis lasts for some time and needs medication to resolve.

Could it have been seizure activity?

She has never had any episodes like this before. Now she is behaving as if it never happened. During the episode she did not whimper or act as if she was in pain. If it was a seizure does she need to go to the vet and is there anything we can do?

If it was a seizure there is nothing you can do at home. With her age she is still in the 'epilepsy' range so the worry would not be based on more serious conditions.

Most veterinarians will not start a pet on anti-seizure medication unless they have more then one seizure each month.

Hopefully your little one does not have any more 'episodes'.
