Single over-groomed spot has become raw needs medication

Rating: 10
Little One

My cat has been over grooming one spot near his anus. He has done this once before in his life. I rescued him when he was 3 weeks old and had to teach him grooming and I wonder if this has something to do with it even though he is now 10. I want to just treat the sore til the habit stops on its own like last time but I don't want anything that will make him ill if he licks it off, and I'd like to avoid the cone collar. And I'm stuck at home right now so I'm really hoping to use something from my own medicine cabinet. Any suggestions?

bitter apple spray is great for stopping them licking an area as it tastes horrible so it usually works as soon as they have had one taste of it, try bathing the area in warm dilute salt water to reduce the soreness. everytime he goes to do it try to distract him so he forgets about it either with a treat or a toy or just a bit of fuss. you could also try a bit of lubricant (ky jelly) to put on the area, however he might like the taste of this and just lick it off. ensure his worming treatment is up to date as this can cause irritation. if his rear smells it might be anal glands that have filled up.

    hope this helps
